ABSTRACT
This research work is aimed at examining the effects of drug abuse among youths and its implication on their academic performance using Augie Local Government Area as a Case study. Although, drugs may have positive
effects on individuals, the researchers have decided to find out the negative effects that these drugs when abused may have on the individuals and lives even in the society at large. At the end of the research, the major findings identified that majority of the respondents testified clearly that drug abuse is the most common practice among the youths of different age bracket and such behaviour have adverse effect not only on the abuser  but to everybody. The factors responsible for its adverse effect is that it has rendered many youth mentally affected, jobless, useless, hopeless, absent minded etc. and even retardate our society by consuming huge sum of money meant for the development of the society in rehabilitating and taking care of the affected individuals. On the other hand, lack of proper government legislation and execution have contributed a lot to the rapid spread of drug abuse in the schools, likewise parental attitudes and socio-cultural factors have also played a leading role in encouraging drug abuse and consequently drug availability in our surroundings.

CHAPTER ONE

Kebbi state is a state in the north-western part of Nigeria with its capital at Birnin Kebbi. The state was created from the old Sokoto state in 1991. It was bordered by Sokoto state, Niger state, Dosso region in republic of Niger and Benin republic. It has a total area of 36,800km2.  The state has a population of 3,137,989 people as projected from the 1991 census, in 21 local government areas.
The state has Sudan and sahel-savannah. The southern part is generally rocky with the Niger River traversing it from Benin in Edo state to Ngaski LGA of the state. The northern part of the state is sandy with River Rima passing through Argungu to Bagudo LGAs where it empties into the Niger. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people especially in rural areas and the crops produced are mainly grains; animal rearing and fishing are also common. Islam is the dominant religion of the people. There are 225 political wards, 3000 settlements and 1036 hard to reach settlements in the 21 local government areas of the state. Kebbi state has four emirate councils namely Gwandu, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru.  It also has 35 districts. The Local Government areas are as follows: Aleiro, Arewa, Argungu, Augie, Bagudo, Birnin Kebbi, Bunza, Dandi, Fakai, Gwandu, Jega, Kalgo, Koko/Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Sakaba, Shanga, Suru,Wasagu/ Danko  Yauri and  Zuru.  Augie Local Government Area has a widespread of educational institutions among its various communities which are either owned by government or private individuals ranging from pre-primary, primary and secondary schools. The area is naturally endowed with places of high attraction such as Augie hydro-electric dam, Reggae hill and mineral resources such as gold, marble, Limestone, clay and high quality Silica. Among other things are the financial institutions, health institutions and varieties of craft activities.
 1.1 Background to the Study
At the moment, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State despite  government’s good intention in trying to promote moral standard through the ban, indiscriminate sales and consumption of the so called socially accepted drugs, a good number of youths in both urban and rural areas  and of different socio-economic background (poor or rich) most of whom are still under the care and tutelage of their parents and guardians unfortunately indulge in  drug abuse and consequent addiction of un-prescribed drugs both licit and illicit without knowing the implication of the side effect on their lives (health) and academic performance.
Drug abuse and consequent addiction exist in almost every part of the country such as institutions (Secondary Schools, Colleges of Education, Polytechnics, and Universities etc.), government ministries and parastatals, companies, homes and societies at large. Drug abuse and consequent addiction is rampant and is daily increasing especially in Augie local government area. This is a menace to the society because many of our dear and productive lives have been wasted, frustrated and meaningless.  In line with this, the behaviour of the addicts has both direct and indirect effect on the society. Take for instance, when an individual reaches the stage of addiction on any drug, it means that he/she is physically and psychologically dependent on the drugs. He/she cannot stay long without taking it, this has led to a serious negative effect on the society because the addict could even resort to committing crimes to enable him/her get money for the purpose of purchasing the drugs.  It has an indirect effect because the addict is not an island, they live among other people and their behaviour affects the people.  For example, a school teacher who is an addict on drugs could leave his/her class unattended in order to get his/her dosage. This means that the job of an addict suffers; wife, children, staff and relatives may be neglected. This is not where it stops it continues just make your interest known and it will be serviced. Thanks best regards
